Day 2 Community Design Challenges
How do I get started?
Pick out a challenge from below and start building! All the challenges require that Ignition is installed, so download and install Ignition 8.3.6 or newer. There's also a gateway backup that you can download here that will be required for many of the challenges. It contains Tags and other resources that you'll find necessary to complete some of the prompts. It's best to load this backup before you start any challenges since a Gateway Restore will wipe out any work you already have.
The login credentials for this Gateway are:
- username: admin
- password: password
If you already have Ignition installed, make a backup of your Gateway before starting.
Download the CDC Gateway backup here.
Easy Challenges - 5 XP each
Troubleshoot Faulty Tags
Find and resolve an issue causing some tags to show bad quality.
Prompt:
There are 4 tower UDT instances in the Towers folder in the default Tag Provider. All of the OPC tags in the pump UDT instance of each tower are broken.
Find and fix the problem. Be ready to explain the cause and show your solution to the trainer.
Modify an Existing View
Improve an existing display.
Prompt:
The Compressor view in the Templates folder is used to visualize Compressors 1-4 in the default Tag Provider. Add visualization for the following additional 5 compressor tags:
- powerDemand
- pressureInletOil
- tempSuction
- tempDischarge
- pressureDischarge
Use a different display component for each tag value.
All tag values should be labeled.
Reset the Gateway Password
Use the Gateway Command-line Utility to reset the Gateway password.
Prompt:
Pretend you have been locked out of the Ignition Gateway. Use the Gateway Command-line Utility to reset the Gateway password to unleashed.
If you log in to the Gateway to test the new password, do not change any configuration settings.
Confirm all users are logged out of the Gateway and leave the browser open on the Gateway home page.
Create an Inherited UDT Definition
Design an expanded version of an existing data template.
Prompt:
In the Dairy Sim device connection, there are 6 Sensor devices. Sensors 1-3 are represented by the Sensor UDT. Sensors 4-6 are newer Sensors with additional data points.
Define a new Sensor UDT to represent the new Sensors.
- This UDT must contain the same tags as the older Sensors 1, 2, and 3; as well as all additional tags found in Sensors 4-6.
- Any changes made to the original Sensor UDT definition must automatically reflect on the new Sensor UDT as well.
Dark Mode: Activate!
While we all wait for the official Dark Mode, try installing this Exchange resource!
Prompt:
Completing this challenge requires the Vision module to be installed.
Find and download Dark Mode for the Designer from the Ignition Exchange.
Carefully follow the installation instructions in the README.
Enable Dark Mode in your Designer session.
Medium Challenges - 10 XP each
Create an Input Form
Create a more robust display to accept user input to update a database.
Prompt:
Create a view that uses the Form component to allow users to add a new gizmo to the gizmos database table.
- This form should be able to accept all possible fields in the gizmos table, except for gizmo_id.
- The form should successfully add a new record to the database.
Each gizmo can be assigned a category, so provide a way for the user to select among valid category names to assign to the gizmo.
Create Style Classes Based on a Style Guide
Translate design guidelines into reusable sets of style rules.
Prompt:
Using the provided style guide, create and apply the necessary style classes to make any of the 'Gizmo Table' views match the requirements of the guide.
In addition to the colors and fonts in the guide, add a label as a header for the view. This label should have a font size of 56px, a solid border on the bottom only that is a color you haven’t used for the text or background and is 8px below the text, and a bottom margin of 16px.
Create style classes necessary to style the table on the view you selected to match the style guide. Specifically, change the font on the table headers to be Roboto, bold, 24px, with a text color and background color matching the style guide. Change the cell text to be Roboto 16px, with a text color and border colors to match the style guide. Make sure the selection highlight matches the guide as well.
Download More RAM
Give the Gateway a little extra memory.
Prompt:
Increase the maximum amount of memory allocated to the Gateway to 3GB (3072MB).
Use Client Tags as Color Constants
Use Vision Client tags to customize color schemes for individual Clients.
Prompt:
In the Vision Client Tags Tag Provider, create a folder with at least 3 different string type Memory tags to use as color constants. Name the tags by how its color will be used (header text, button background, text border, etc.).
Create a Vision window, and apply these color constants to various property bindings (backgrounds, text color, borders, etc.).
In the Header Docked Window, add one input component for each Client Tag for users to change their Client tags to different colors.
- Each input should have a few preselected options to choose from.
You can find official IA and Ignition brand colors and guidelines on the IA website.
Hard Challenges - 15 XP each
Update a Database from a Table
Preserve data integrity by giving users predefined lists of options.
Prompt:
Inspect the Table component in the Dropdown Table view. Modify the query binding its data property to include the name and ID of each gizmo's category.
Display the category on the Table component in such a way that allows users to select from a dropdown list of categories when they attempt to edit a category on the table. The dropdowns should dynamically display all valid category options.
When users attempt to update the category for a gizmo, the following things should happen:
- The user should be prompted for a confirmation before any action is taken. If confirmed:
- The gizmo's category should be updated in the database.
- The table display refreshes to show the updated data.
