Test Taking Strategies

Following are some suggested strategies for success on the Core Certification test.

Carefully read the questions

The test contains a variety of question types. For multiple choice questions, you might be asked to select just one answer or select all answers that are correct. Questions with multiple possible answers will include the phrase "Select all that apply." For fill-in-the-blank questions, you will be asked to supply the information requested. Regardless, ensure that you understand specifically what the question is looking for prior to identifying the answer.

Carefully review all of the different potential answers

While every effort is made to make the test as clear as possible, the names of Ignition components and properties can be easily mixed up. Please ensure the answer you are selecting is the one you intended to choose.

Use the provided gateway and projects

The Gateway backup provided is designed to be used during the test. It is required to have both the Gateway as well as the various projects open while taking the test, to allow for verification of answers and testing of concepts. You will also need to look at resources within the projects to properly answer some questions. If changes are made to the projects and you need to revert back to the original Gateway, you can re-download the Gateway backup using the link in the test instructions and start with a fresh install.

Test and verify your answers

Even for questions that don't refer to pre-existing resources in the backup, use the Ignition Gateway, Designer, and runtimes to test any of your proposed solutions before submitting. This is particularly important if you are unsure of the answer.

Use the built-in Ignition help features

For many parts of Ignition, you can use your mouse pointer to hover over a component or property to find additional information about that part of Ignition. Prior to starting the Core Test, it is useful to review these help features to become familiar with how they work and the type of information you can find.

Take advantage of the search tool in the Manual

The Ignition User Manual is a great resource to use during the Core Test, and the search tool located in the top right corner of the manual makes looking up information more efficient. Focus searches on keywords to streamline the process.

Block out the amount of time needed for each section

Once a section is started, the timer begins for that part of the test and does not stop even if you close the test. It is recommended to eliminate all distractions and avoid working on other tasks while taking the Core Certification test.

Plan the amount of time per question

Each section has a set number of questions and a set amount of time to complete those questions, which is provided prior to starting a section. Allocating an appropriate amount of time for each question makes it less likely you will run out of time at the end of the test.

Take the TestInvite Sample Test and the Practice Test before starting the test

TestInvite provides a Sample Test that allows you to experience the test platform and work with your IT department in case there are issues. This allows you to address those issues prior to starting the actual test. The Practice Test provides a look at the types of questions you might see on the Core Certification test. Both resources are helpful in preparing you for the test.

Review the Topics Covered in the Study Guide

The Topics Covered page includes links to Inductive University and Manual resources for topics covered in the test. This is especially beneficial if there are topics that are unfamiliar or in need of review.
